The Physics, In A Nutshell
The three mechanisms
There are three fundamental mechanisms of heat transfer by which energy moves from one thing to another. Conduction, convection, and radiation. Radiant heat transfer occurs when energy is transferred in the form of electromagnetic waves from a hotter object to a colder one. Unlike conduction and convection, radiation doesn't require a medium for transmission, allowing it to travel through space or a vacuum.
The missing piece of thermal comfort
The thermal comfort industry has become hyperfocused on convection through the prevalence of HVAC technology, forgetting about the importance of radiant heat transfer. While convection is often responsible for 20-30% of thermal comfort, radiation can be responsible for upwards of 50%. This means it is a critical forgotten piece of the thermal comfort puzzle that significantly impacts our everyday lives.
